Places I've eaten at · No onion, no garlic

The Satvik Map

Satvik food: no onion, no garlic, no caffeine. I've eaten at every one of these 2 places, in Baroda. Ask for no onion, no garlic when you order.

About these places

My focus is satvik food: no onion, no garlic, no caffeine. Jain food goes further and also leaves out root vegetables like potato, carrot and ginger, so if you eat Jain, check with the kitchen.

I've eaten at every one of these 2 places, in Baroda. Ask for no onion, no garlic when you order.

Tips for ordering

  • If they don't know "satvik", say "Jain, but potato and ginger are fine."
  • In Bombay, the usual way to ask is "half Jain": no onion, no garlic.
  • In North India, and especially around Delhi and Gurgaon, many places serve food without onion and garlic during Navratri, in the run-up to Ram Navami and Dussehra. I always look forward to it.

Pizza On The Rock

Old Padra Road, Baroda

From my visit Amit, the owner, came back from the US and set this up, and inside it doesn't feel like India: drinks you'd only find in the US, country music playing, a very nice setup. During the riots, he took in his chefs, whose neighbourhood was affected. That stayed with me. He's an exceptional guy.

From my visit Some of the best continental food I've had anywhere, hands down: casseroles, lasagna. Really good Punjabi food too.
